How the Student Assistance Program Removes the Barriers That Push WCCCD Students Out of School
Here’s something most people get wrong about why students leave community college.
They think it’s about grades. About not being “cut out for it.” About not trying hard enough.
It’s almost never that.
Most students who leave WCCCD don’t leave because they’re failing their classes. They leave because life got in the way. The car broke down. The rent came due. The hours got cut at work. The childcare fell through. The anxiety got too loud to study through.
These aren’t academic problems. They’re life problems. And life problems have solutions.
That’s exactly what the Student Assistance Program (SAP) is built for. It’s a partnership between Wayne County Community College District and The Information Center, and its whole job is to help you stay enrolled by removing the barriers that have nothing to do with your classes, and everything to do with whether you make it to graduation.
If you’re a WCCCD student who’s felt like you’re one bad week away from having to quit, this blog is for you. Let’s talk about what actually gets in the way and how SAP helps you get past it.
One number to save right now: 1-855-59WCCCD (1-855-599-2223). Free. Confidential. No judgment. That’s your direct line to the Student Assistance Program.
The Real Reason Students Leave
Think about the students you know who didn’t finish. Maybe you’re one of them on a second try. Maybe it’s a friend, a cousin, a coworker.
Now think about why they actually stopped.
It usually wasn’t a failing grade. It was a moment where school and survival collided and survival had to win. You can’t study for a midterm when you don’t know where you’re sleeping next week. You can’t focus in class when your stomach is empty. You can’t make it to your 8 AM when your car won’t start and the bus doesn’t run on time.
When those moments hit, dropping out doesn’t feel like giving up. It feels like the only responsible choice.
Here’s what SAP wants you to know: you don’t have to choose between staying in school and handling your life. There’s help for the life part, so you can keep the school part.
Barriers SAP Helps You Get Past
These are the five things that push students out of school most often and exactly how the Student Assistance Program helps you get past each one.
Food
You can’t learn on an empty stomach.
Food insecurity is one of the most common, and most hidden, struggles students face. Skipping meals to save money. Stretching a single meal across a whole day. Choosing between groceries and gas.
SAP can connect you with food pantries near your campus or home, emergency food help if you’re in a crisis right now, and help applying for food assistance programs like SNAP/EBT if you qualify. You don’t have to prove how bad it’s gotten. You just have to ask.
Housing
You can’t do homework if you don’t have a stable place to live.
Maybe your rent is behind. Maybe you got an eviction notice. Maybe you’re couch-surfing and trying to keep it together. Housing instability is one of the single biggest reasons students drop out — and it’s one of the hardest things to talk about.
SAP can connect you with emergency rental assistance, help finding affordable or temporary housing, and support navigating the application process for housing programs. You don’t have to figure out the system alone.
Mental Health
You can’t pour from an empty cup.
Stress. Anxiety. Depression. Feeling overwhelmed all the time. Not sleeping. Not being able to focus. If any of this is you, you’re not weak and you’re not failing — you’re carrying a lot.
SAP can connect you with free and low-cost mental health resources through campus and community partners, plus counseling and support services. Asking for help with your mental health is just as real and just as important as asking for help with rent.
Bills and Utilities
A shutoff notice shouldn’t be the reason you stop going to class.
If you’re behind on your electric, gas, or water bill, that stress follows you into every classroom. The fear of losing service makes it almost impossible to think about anything else.
SAP can connect you with state and local utility assistance programs, shutoff protection resources if you’re at risk of losing service, and help applying for programs you might not even know exist. One call can take a huge weight off your shoulders.
Childcare
You can’t make it to class if there’s no one to watch your kids.
A lot of WCCCD students are parents. And when childcare falls through — a sitter cancels, a daycare spot disappears, the cost gets too high — school is usually the first thing that gives.
SAP can help you find childcare resources and connect you with community programs that support student parents. Being a parent shouldn’t mean giving up on your degree. SAP helps you do both.
These five aren’t the only things SAP helps with. Transportation problems, employment needs, and other barriers come up too. If something is getting between you and staying enrolled, call and ask. 1-855-59WCCCD.
How SAP Actually Works
Here’s the part that surprises students: it’s simpler than you think, and it doesn’t involve a pile of forms or a long wait.
Step 1: You reach out.
Call 1-855-59WCCCD. Or email The Information Center. Or scan a QR code on a campus poster. Or tell your advisor or professor, and let them connect you. However you reach out, you’re taking the first step.
Step 2: Someone listens.
You tell us what’s going on. Not a 10-page application, just a conversation about what you’re dealing with. Maybe it’s one thing. Maybe it’s five things at once. Either way, we listen first.
Step 3: We connect you to the right help.
Based on what you’re facing, we connect you to the resources that fit, food, housing, mental health, bills, childcare, or whatever else is getting in the way. Sometimes that’s a program The Information Center runs. Sometimes it’s a community partner we know and trust. Either way, we point you in the right direction and help you get there.
Step 4: You stay in school.
That’s the whole point. The barrier gets smaller. The crisis gets handled. And you get to keep doing the thing you came to WCCCD to do – finish.
Free. Confidential. No Judgment.
Three things matter most about how SAP works, and they’re worth saying clearly:
• It’s free. There’s no cost to you. None. SAP is a service WCCCD and The Information Center provide because they want you to graduate.
• It’s confidential. Reaching out for help doesn’t go on some permanent record. It’s a private conversation about getting you support.
• There’s no judgment. The people who run this program have heard it all. They’re not going to lecture you, look down on you, or make you feel small for needing help. They’re going to help. That’s their entire job.
A lot of students don’t reach out because they feel ashamed, or because they think their situation isn’t “bad enough” to deserve help. Let’s clear that up: if something is getting between you and staying enrolled, that’s reason enough. You don’t have to hit rock bottom to qualify for support.
For WCCCD Faculty and Advisors
If you teach or advise at WCCCD, you see it before almost anyone else does.
The student who was engaged and then went quiet. The one whose attendance started slipping. The one who mentioned, almost in passing, that things are “a little rough right now.” You notice. And often, you’re the first person in a position to do something about it.
Here’s the easiest thing you can do: hand them the number.
1-855-59WCCCD (1-855-599-2223). Free, confidential, no judgment. You don’t have to diagnose the problem or have all the answers. You just have to make the connection — and SAP takes it from there.
Sometimes the difference between a student who drops out and a student who graduates is one person who noticed, and one number passed along at the right moment. You can be that person.
Faculty and advisors: keep 1-855-59WCCCD somewhere handy, a sticky note, your syllabus, your office door. When a student is struggling, you’ll be glad it’s right there.
You Came This Far for a Reason
Enrolling in college takes courage. Showing up takes more. If you’re a WCCCD student reading this, you’ve already done the hard part of starting. You’re building toward something, a degree, a career, a different future for you and the people who count on you.
Don’t let a rough month take that away from you.
The barriers in front of you are real. We’re not going to pretend they’re not. But they’re also not the end of your story, not if you reach out. The Student Assistance Program exists for exactly this: to help you get past the hard part and keep going.
You belong here. Let us help you stay.
Know a Student Who Needs This?
If you’re reading this and someone came to mind, a classmate, a friend, your kid, a student in your class, send it to them. Screenshot the number. Share the link. You might be the reason they stay enrolled this semester.
