Help a WCCCD Student Get the Support They Need
WCCCD students sometimes need help with things that have nothing to do with class, rent, food, mental health, childcare, transportation, and more.
The Student Assistance Program (SAP) is here for that.
If you are an advisor, professor, campus staff member, family supporter, or community partner, you can connect a student to free, judgment-free help.
A Quick Recap of SAP
SAP is a free, confidential resource navigation program for currently enrolled WCCCD students.
It is operated by The Information Center under contract with WCCCD.
SAP helps students with food, housing, utilities, mental health, childcare, transportation, employment, and the rest of life that gets in the way of class.
Students do not have to be in crisis to qualify. Any current WCCCD student is eligible.
There is no cost to the student. There is no cost to the referrer.
Why Refer a Student to SAP
One referral covers many needs. You do not have to track down food, housing, mental health, and childcare resources separately. SAP coordinates the connection.
Trained, friendly intake. A real person picks up. Students are met without judgment, no matter what is going on.
Helps students stay enrolled. Most SAP students are dealing with something outside class. SAP removes the barrier so the student can stay focused on school.
Free for everyone. No cost to the student. No cost to the referrer. No catch.
A real local team. SAP is staffed by The Information Center, a Wayne County nonprofit that has been here since 1975.
How to Refer a WCCCD Student
Three ways to refer
Warm hand-off. Sit with the student and call 1-855-59WCCCD together. Make the introduction. The student takes it from there. This is the highest-success referral type.
Direct referral. Submit a referral online or call us. Share the student’s contact info (with their permission) and we will reach out.
Share the number. Give the student the SAP phone number and the URL of the WCCCD SAP main page. They call when they are ready. Lower contact rate, but always available as a backup option.
Make the Connection
Most students who use SAP did not call on their own.
Someone they trusted said ‘You don't have to figure this out alone. Would you like me to call with you?’
That someone could be you. We will take it from there.
Common Questions from Referrers
A warm hand-off, sit with the student and call 1-855-59WCCCD together, has the highest success rate.
If that is not possible, submit an online referral or share the SAP number directly with the student.
If you are sharing identifiable information with us (name, contact info), yes.
If you are simply giving the student the SAP phone number to call themselves, no permission is needed.
It is fine. SAP staff are trained to talk with any student. The student decides if SAP is the right fit. There is no penalty for a referral that does not turn into ongoing support.
SAP serves currently enrolled WCCCD students.
For students who are not yet enrolled or who are at another institution, we can refer them to other programs at The Information Center or community resources.
No. SAP is free for the student. There is no fee for partners or referrers.
